JIC 37° Male x NPT Tapered Male 45° Compact Elbow

JIC on the hose side, NPT into the port – the classic crossover on American pumps, cylinders and gearboxes. The compact 45° body clears the hose from the casting without the bulk of a 90.

Thread Standards

• JIC 37° Male – SAE J514 37° flare. It seals metal-to-metal on the 37° cone, so it takes no tape at all.
• NPT Tapered Male – ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 tapered pipe thread. It seals on thread interference, so tape or sealant is a must.

How to Choose

• NPT and BSPT are both tapered but different thread forms. NPT is 60°, BSPT is 55°, and forcing one into the other damages both.
• The NPT end needs tape or sealant. The JIC end must stay dry, so do not tape both just because they arrived on the same fitting.
• NPT sizes are nominal pipe sizes, not measured thread diameters. A 1/4 inch NPT thread measures about 13.7 mm across the crests.

Where You’ll Find It

• JIC 37° Male – Hose ends and ports on imported US and Asian machinery – Caterpillar, John Deere, Case IH, New Holland, Bobcat, Kubota, Takeuchi.
• NPT Tapered Male – American-built gearboxes, pumps, compressors and older industrial pipework.

Cross-Reference

• JIC 37° Male – SAE J514 / ISO 8434-2 37° flare. Parker call this series Triple-Lok. The industrial cousin of the AN 37° flare used in aviation and motorsport.
• NPT Tapered Male – ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 tapered pipe thread. The dryseal variant is written NPTF.

Parker, Gates, Aeroquip and Ryco all manufacture to these same standards under their own part numbering, so a fitting built to the standard above will mate with theirs.

Cross-references are given at series level as a guide to the standard, not as a part-for-part substitution. Always confirm the thread form, size and seal type against the port before ordering.

Technicians Advice

Start the tape two threads back from the end and wrap in the direction of tightening, or the first turn will peel it into the bore and it will finish up in a valve spool. Two to three wraps is plenty; packing the thread with tape splits female castings.
