A plain flow control is a fixed restriction — the flow through it changes as soon as the pressure across it changes. That means a function slows down when the load comes on and speeds up when it comes off.
A pressure compensated flow control fixes that. An internal spool automatically adjusts to keep a constant pressure drop across the metering orifice, so the flow stays at the set value whatever the load is doing. Set the speed once and it stays there.
Worth the extra where consistency matters: feed rates, synchronising two functions, anything an operator has to judge by eye.
