
A needle valve is the simplest way to slow a hydraulic function down. Turn the knob and a tapered needle closes progressively on the orifice, restricting flow in both directions. About the 1" size: the 1/4" to 3/4" valves are the LG body, black steel with a brass knurled knob, rated 315 bar. The 1" is the STB body, a plated steel in-line valve rated 320 bar at 150 L/min. Two different bodies doing the same job, which is why the photo changes when you pick 1". If you need more than 150 L/min through a 1" port, call us.

Fit it on the return side wherever you can. Metering out is what actually controls a cylinder, because an overrunning load (a boom coming down, a tipper body dropping) will pull the ram faster than the pump can feed it and a valve on the inlet never sees it. Wind the knob fully open before you start the machine the first time, otherwise you dead-head the pump straight onto the relief. Then set it with the oil warm: a setting dialled in on cold oil will run noticeably faster once the tank comes up to temperature. All the useful adjustment lives in the last turn or so off the seat, so if you are trying to set a slow crawl with the knob nearly wide open you are on the wrong size valve. Do not crank it hard shut to stop a leak either. Every litre you throttle turns into heat in the tank, and closing a needle onto its seat under pressure bruises the taper so the valve never opens properly again. Most important: this is not a load holding device. It leaks past when it is closed, so never leave a load parked on one. That job belongs to a pilot operated check or a counterbalance valve. Last one, and it catches people every week: these are BSPP parallel ports. They seal on a bonded washer or an O-ring on the male fitting, never on thread tape. Tape on a parallel thread gives you a weep and a tank full of shredded PTFE.
