Thread Standards

• BSP Tapered Female – BSPT to ISO 7 / BS 21. It seals on the thread interference and must be taped or sealed.
• BSP Tapered Male – BSPT to ISO 7 / BS 21. It seals on the tapered thread itself, so it needs PTFE tape or a liquid thread sealant.

How to Choose

• Both ends seal on the thread. Sealant on the male end and on whatever male goes into the female.
• Work out which direction you need. The male is what screws into the machine, the female is the new port size you are creating.
• Do not mix BSPT with BSPP here. A parallel male will not seal in the tapered female.

Technicians Advice

A tapered bush is a wedge in a wedge and it does not need much to seat. Hand tight plus two or three turns at each end. Over-tightening a bush into a cast port is one of the easier ways to crack a housing and turn a five minute job into a day.

Where You’ll Find It

• BSP Tapered Female – Female side of local pipework, adaptor blocks and gauge manifolds.
• BSP Tapered Male – Older Australian and British pipework, gauge ports, tank and return lines, and cast pump and gearbox housings.

Cross-Reference

• BSP Tapered Female – BSPT to ISO 7 / BS 21, written Rc for female.
• BSP Tapered Male – BSPT to ISO 7 / BS 21, written R for male. Sometimes labelled PT or BSP taper.

Parker, Gates, Aeroquip and Ryco all manufacture to these same standards under their own part numbering, so a fitting built to the standard above will mate with theirs.
