Product Details
Brand: Caproni
Weight: 8.50 kg

A two stage hi-low log splitter pump built in Europe by Caproni. Both gear sets pump together at low pressure to run the ram out fast, then when the wood starts to resist and pressure reaches the kickout setting the big stage unloads automatically and the small stage keeps pushing at full pressure. That is how a splitter gets a fast return stroke and still splits a knotty round. The changeover is built into the pump - there is no external valve to plumb, set or lose.

Pick your options below and the exact factory part number appears on screen. Every choice in the dropdowns is a real catalogued part number with a firm price - nothing here is a guess.

Applications

  • Firewood log splitters, 5 to 25 horsepower
  • Petrol and diesel engine driven splitters
  • Presses and balers needing fast approach then high force
  • Any circuit that wants speed first and pressure second

Ways to buy this gear pump

  • Off the shelf: every combination in the dropdowns below is a real part number we can order today
  • Seal kits and shaft seals: full reseal kits for this frame are on the seal kit listing linked further down - starting part number GR205-SK
  • Tandem and multiple pumps, port adaptors and non standard shafts: all available from the factory. Call 1300 146 737 or use the enquiry form and we will code and price it

8.20 + 14.0 cc/rev 22C8.2/14X956GHL 8.50 kg

15.0 + 25.0 cc/rev 22C15/25X956GHL 8.50 kg

Standard Supply Configuration

  • Complete two stage hi-low pump with the automatic kickout built into the body
  • 4 bolt DIN mount and 1:8 tapered drive shaft
  • BSPP threaded inlet and outlet ports
  • Kickout band set at the factory between 30 and 60 bar
  • Bare pump - no bell housing, coupling, tank, valve or fittings included
  • Standard blank rear cover unless a relief cover has been quoted separately
  • Rotation as stated in the title - a gear pump cannot be reversed in the field

How to Order - Part Number Breakdown

Every part number on this listing decodes the same way. Worked example:

22C 4.5/11 X956 G HL

Position What it means
22C Series - Caproni group 2 plus group 2 tandem pump. C = clockwise rotation
4.5/11 The two displacements in cc. The first figure is the small high pressure stage, the second is the large fast stage
X956 Mount and shaft series - 4 bolt DIN mount, 1:8 tapered shaft
G Ports - G = BSPP threaded
HL Hi-Low with automatic kickout built into the pump body

The kickout band on these is 30 to 60 bar - that is the pressure at which the large stage unloads and the small stage takes over. It is set in the pump and is not field adjustable.

General Performance Data

Published factory figures. Maximum continuous pressure and speed both fall as displacement rises - always read the row for the exact part number you are buying.

How to choose

  • Work out the flow you need first. Litres per minute = displacement in cc x rpm divided by 1000, then take off 5 to 10 percent for slip. A 1,450 rpm electric motor on a 16.8cc pump gives roughly 23 L/min.
  • Then check the pressure. Continuous pressure falls as displacement rises on every gear pump frame. Read the performance table for the exact displacement you are choosing, not the headline figure.
  • Match the mount and shaft to the machine. 4 bolt DIN with a 1:8 taper is the European standard. SAE 2 bolt with a keyed or splined shaft is the American standard and is what most Australian bell housings, gearboxes and couplings expect.
  • Confirm rotation from the shaft end. Gear pumps cannot be reversed in the field. Look at the shaft coming towards you and note which way it turns.
  • Check the power available. kW = flow in L/min x pressure in bar divided by 600, then divide by about 0.85 for efficiency. There is no point specifying a pump the engine or motor cannot turn.
  • Not sure? Call 1300 146 737 with your drive speed, the flow you want, the pressure and a photo of the old pump. We do this every day.

Technicians Advice

  • The kickout is inside the pump. There is no external unloading valve to plumb or adjust. The changeover band is 30 to 60 bar and it is set at the factory. If your splitter feels slow on the approach stroke, check engine speed and oil temperature before you blame the kickout.
  • Size the engine to both stages. Both gear sets pump together on the fast stroke, so the power demand is the sum of the two displacements. A 4.5/11.3 pump wants about 5 hp, a 15/25 pump wants 20 to 25 hp. Undersize the engine and it bogs on the approach stroke, which is the opposite of what you bought it for.
  • Tank size and oil temperature. A log splitter puts nearly all of its energy into heat. Twenty to thirty litres of tank for a 5 hp unit, more for the big ones, and keep the oil under 80 degrees. Small tanks are why splitter pumps die in their second season.
  • Full bore suction and a strainer you can reach. A 1 inch inlet on the bigger pumps, and a suction strainer you can actually get to and clean. Sawdust finds its way into everything.
  • The kickout is not a relief valve. It changes stages; it does not limit maximum pressure. The splitter valve still needs its own relief set to the ram and cylinder rating.

Warranty and Service

12-month warranty on every pump. If you are identifying an existing pump, photograph every number cast or stamped on the body and the shaft end and send it through with your enquiry - gear pump part numbers are long and one letter changes the shaft or the rotation.
