This is the valve that decides where the oil goes. On a 700 bar power pack it either sits on the pump as the operator control, or it goes inline out at the job so the operator stands next to the ram instead of the pump. BOSS build eight of them: a simple 2 way 2 position for single acting rams, 4 way 3 position lever valves in tandem and closed centre, versions with built in pilot check valves that hold the load when the lever comes back to neutral, and solenoid versions for the PES and PEDS pump series. Every one is rated to 700 bar. Match it to your pump series below and it is on its way.

Three things catch people out with these valves.
Tandem versus closed centre is not a preference, it is a circuit decision. Tandem centre dumps pump flow straight to tank in neutral, so the motor unloads and the oil stays cool – that is what you want on a single pump driving a single ram. Closed centre blocks the P port in neutral, which you must have if that pump feeds a second valve or an accumulator, and must NOT have on a fixed displacement pump with no unloading path or you will cook the relief valve.
A spool in neutral is not a lock. Even a brand new valve leaks a few drops per minute across the spool lands, and at 700 bar a few drops is a ram that has walked down 20 mm by smoko. If the load has to stay where you put it – and especially if anyone is working under it – buy the version with the pilot operated checks (DVF1B, DVF1C, DVK1B) or fit a separate load holding valve, and still put steel under the load.
On the inline models watch your hose sizing and hose length. Every metre of 1/4" hose between pump and valve is pressure drop and lag on the return stroke; keep the run as short as the job allows, and never fit a quick coupler between the valve and the ram on a pilot check circuit – a partly engaged coupler will stop the pilot from opening and you will be standing there wondering why the ram will not come back.
