NPSM Swivel Female x NPT Tapered Male 45° Compact Elbow

Straight-thread swivel female one end, tapered NPT male the other. Turns a line 45° and still lets you break the joint later without unwinding the whole run – common on gauges, filter heads and return lines.

Thread Standards

• NPSM Swivel Female – ANSI B1.20.1 straight pipe thread with a 60° internal cone. It seals on the cone seat rather than the thread, so it must not be taped.
• NPT Tapered Male – ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 tapered pipe thread. It seals on thread interference, so tape or sealant is a must.

How to Choose

• The NPSM female is straight-threaded with a 60° internal cone. It is not an NPT female, even though the thread pitch matches.
• Do not tape the NPSM end. It seals on the cone, and tape holds the cone off its seat.
• The NPT male end does need tape or sealant, so the two ends are treated differently.

Where You’ll Find It

• NPSM Swivel Female – Gauges, filter heads, sensors and return lines where the joint has to come apart regularly.
• NPT Tapered Male – American-built gearboxes, pumps, compressors and older industrial pipework.

• NPT Tapered Male – ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 tapered pipe thread. The dryseal variant is written NPTF.

Technicians Advice

This is the fitting most often taped on the wrong end. If it weeps at the swivel, strip the tape out, inspect the cone for a witness mark, and re-seat it dry. Tape at a swivel joint never fixes the leak because it is usually the cause of it.
