A leader hose is the short sacrificial length between the machine and the main run. It takes the wear at the reel exit and the abuse at the manhole lip, and replacing three metres costs a fraction of replacing a full reel.
If your main hose is failing near the machine end rather than out in the line, this is what you are missing.
