The pump for a long stroke with a heavy load waiting at the end of it. Stage one shifts 80 cc a stroke at low pressure to close the gap fast; when the load comes on, the pump changes itself over to the 5 cc stage and gives you 500 bar with a lever you can still work. You do not switch it – it changes over on pressure, which is exactly what you want when both hands are busy. Made in Italy, cast iron body.

Two things to get right on this one. First the relief: it adjusts from 50 to 500 bar and must be set to your weakest component, never the pump ceiling – find the lowest rated part in the circuit, usually a hose or a cylinder seal, and set below it with a gauge actually fitted, not by counting turns. Second, 500 bar is a different world from 200: fittings and hose that were happy at 200 bar are not necessarily rated for this, and a pinhole at 500 bar injects oil through skin – hunt leaks with cardboard, never a hand. Expect the changeover to feel like the pump suddenly got harder; that is stage two arriving, not a fault. Decide the mounting orientation before you drill because the lever action changes with it, and size the tank generously – the fast stage moves 80 cc a stroke and will find the bottom of an undersized reservoir quicker than anything else in this range.
