How to choose

• Pump that will not reach pressure with clean oil? Suspect the relief valve before condemning the pump.

Technicians Advice

The two parts people actually ring about are the gasket kit and the rubber boot, and both are cheap enough to keep on the shelf. The tank gasket weeps before anything else fails on these pumps – if you find oil under the pump body rather than at a fitting, that is it, and there are two kits because the single and double acting bodies differ. The boot is not decoration: it keeps grit off the polished shaft, and a pump worked with a torn boot for a season will have a scored shaft and a seal that will not hold. The relief valve doubles as a service item – a pump that used to make pressure and no longer does, on clean oil, is usually a tired relief rather than a worn pump, and it is a ten minute swap. Fit the lowering valve when the load needs to come down under control: it is a proper metered descent, not an on-off dump. And treat the 600 mm handle as the consumable it is – lever tubes get lost, bent and borrowed as pry bars, and the pump is useless without one.
