High pressure oil is not the same job as tractor oil, and this is the one place people cut corners and pay for it. At 700 bar the film between the piston and the bore is measured in microns, so contamination that a low pressure circuit would shrug off scores a high pressure pump. Fill through a clean funnel, never straight from a bottle that has been sitting open in a workshop, and wipe the filler neck before you crack it.
Fill with every cylinder in the circuit fully retracted, to the level mark and no further – oil that is in the ram has to come back somewhere, and an overfilled reservoir blows the filler plug or the seal the first time you retract.
If the oil comes out milky, you have water in it, and water at 700 bar does not compress the way oil does. Drain it, flush it and find out where the water got in before you refill.
