How to choose

• Size to your biggest pump: the tester must carry the full flow of the circuit you are testing – when in doubt, go a size up.
• 300 L/min covers most mobile plant and industrial power units; 400 L/min adds headroom for big excavators and multi-pump systems; 800 L/min is for high-flow industrial and mining circuits.

Technicians Advice

A digital tester with a loading valve is the only honest way to condition-test a pump: flow at idle pressure tells you almost nothing, because a worn pump can still push near-full flow with no load on it. Wind the loading valve up to working pressure and watch what the flow does – a healthy pump holds its flow within a few percent, a worn one falls away fast.

Do the same test at the same oil temperature every service and write the numbers down; the trend is worth more than any single reading. The built-in burst disc is your safety net, not a target – size the tester so your circuit's relief setting sits comfortably under the tester's rating, and always plumb the return to tank before you load up.
