Thread Standards

• SAE 45° Flare Male – SAE J512 45° flare. It seals metal-to-metal on the 45° cone, which is shallower than a JIC 37°.

How to Choose

• A 45° and a 37° look near enough the same in the hand. Hold the two cones nose to nose and the difference shows.
• A 45° male pulled into a 37° female will hold for a while then fret the seat and fail.
• The flare does the sealing, so nothing goes on the thread.

Technicians Advice

The 45° seat is shallow and soft and does not tolerate being nipped up hard. Wind it to a firm feel and stop. Once a 45° seat is bruised or scored it will never seal properly again, so replace the fitting rather than trying to lap it in.
