How to choose

• Check the ratchet is not simply locked before you order
• If the drum is also stiff, the bearing may be the real problem

Technicians Advice

This comes as a sealed cartridge for a reason. Do not open the old housing to compare - the spring inside is under enough tension to take fingers off. Swap the cartridge complete and dispose of the old one intact.

Reel spares are worth keeping on the truck rather than ordering when it stops. A hose stop is the cheapest insurance on the whole assembly - fit it about 300 mm back from the coupling so the fitting never reaches the guide arm, and a rubber part under fifty dollars saves a swivel and a bent arm. If the hose is wearing on one edge, the roller guide is out of adjustment or missing, and you will go through another hose before you go through another guide. A reel that will not rewind is a broken spring nine times out of ten, but check the ratchet is disengaged first - sometimes it is simply locked and everyone panics.
