NPT Tapered Female x NPSM Swivel Female 90° Compact Elbow

Tapered NPT female one end, straight-thread NPSM swivel the other, at 90°. The two threads look almost identical and behave completely differently, which is the whole point of this fitting.

Thread Standards

• NPT Tapered Female – ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 tapered pipe thread. It seals on the thread and needs tape or sealant every time.
• NPSM Swivel Female – ANSI B1.20.1 straight pipe thread with a 60° internal cone. It seals on the cone seat rather than the thread, so it must not be taped.

How to Choose

• NPT female is tapered and seals on the thread. NPSM female is straight and seals on a 60° cone. Same pitch, different job.
• Tape the NPT end only. Taping the NPSM end holds the cone off its seat.
• Check which one you actually need - the pitch matching means the wrong one will still screw together.

Technicians Advice

If you only remember one thing about this fitting, it is that tape goes in the tapered end and nowhere near the swivel. A weeping NPSM swivel that has been taped is the single most common fault we see on gauge and filter plumbing.

• NPSM Swivel Female – Gauges, filter heads, sensors and return lines where the joint has to come apart regularly.
