Thread Standards

• NPSM Swivel Female – ANSI B1.20.1 straight pipe thread with a 60° internal cone. It seals on the cone seat rather than the thread, so it must not be taped.
• NPT Tapered Female – ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 tapered pipe thread. It seals on the thread and needs tape or sealant every time.

How to Choose

• NPSM is a straight thread with a 30° internal seat and swivels. NPT is tapered and seals on the thread.
• The two look similar and share thread sizes. An NPT male into an NPSM female will bottom on the seat, not seal on the thread.
• Sealant on the NPT side only. The NPSM seat seals dry.

Technicians Advice

This is the pair most often mixed up in an American-built machine, because NPSM and NPT will start into each other. If the male winds in freely and then stops dead against a shoulder, you are on an NPSM seat and it needs no sealant.

• NPSM Swivel Female – Gauges, filter heads, sensors and return lines where the joint has to come apart regularly.
• NPT Tapered Female – Female side of American pipework, adaptor blocks and gauge manifolds.
