Thread Standards

• NPSM Swivel Female – ANSI B1.20.1 straight pipe thread with a 60° internal cone. It seals on the cone seat rather than the thread, so it must not be taped.
• NPT Tapered Female – ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 tapered pipe thread. It seals on the thread and needs tape or sealant every time.

How to Choose

• On a branch tee the two in-line ports carry the main flow and the third port comes off the side at 90°. Get that the wrong way round and the tee physically will not fit the run.
• NPSM is a straight thread with an internal 30° seat and swivels. NPT is tapered and seals on the thread.
• Sealant only on the male going into the NPT branch. The two NPSM seats seal dry.
• The two look alike and share thread sizes, so check which is which before you fit anything.

Technicians Advice

This is the pair most often mixed up on American gear. If a male winds in freely then stops dead against a shoulder, you are on an NPSM seat and it wants no sealant. If it tightens gradually, it is the tapered branch.
