Thread Standards

• JIC 37° Male – SAE J514 37° flare. It seals metal-to-metal on the 37° cone, so it takes no tape at all.
• BSP Tapered Male – BSPT to ISO 7 / BS 21. It seals on the tapered thread itself, so it needs PTFE tape or a liquid thread sealant.

How to Choose

• On a branch tee the two in-line ports carry the main flow and the third port comes off the side at 90°. Get that the wrong way round and the tee physically will not fit the run.
• The BSPT branch seals on the thread and needs sealant. The two JIC ports seal dry on their cones.
• Confirm the port is BSPT and not NPT. They start into each other and then tear.

Technicians Advice

Wind the tapered branch in hand tight plus two or three turns and stop, then do the JIC ends. Chasing a weep on the branch with more torque cracks the port and turns a fitting job into a housing job.

• JIC 37° Male – Hose ends and ports on imported US and Asian machinery – Caterpillar, John Deere, Case IH, New Holland, Bobcat, Kubota, Takeuchi.
• BSP Tapered Male – Older Australian and British pipework, gauge ports, tank and return lines, and cast pump and gearbox housings.

• JIC 37° Male – SAE J514 / ISO 8434-2 37° flare. Parker call this series Triple-Lok. The industrial cousin of the AN 37° flare used in aviation and motorsport.
• BSP Tapered Male – BSPT to ISO 7 / BS 21, written R for male. Sometimes labelled PT or BSP taper.

Parker, Gates, Aeroquip and Ryco all manufacture to these same standards under their own part numbering, so a fitting built to the standard above will mate with theirs.
