A gear motor is the simplest hydraulic motor there is: two meshing gears in a tight aluminium or cast-iron body. Oil forced between the gears spins them, and the shaft turns. There is no valve plate and no gear star, so a gear motor is happy running fast and light, and unhappy running slow under heavy load.

Gear motor or orbital? Choose a gear motor when you need speed rather than torque — cooler and radiator fan drives, sawmill and grinder drives, sprayer pumps, blowers, fast conveyors. Choose an orbital (Gerotor, Geroler or disc valve) motor when the shaft has to turn slowly and pull hard — augers, winches, slew drives, wheel drives. Gear motors are lighter, cheaper and spin to a few thousand rpm; orbitals make many times the torque at a few hundred rpm.
