Electric Motor 4.0 kW - Elastic joint

Three ways to hang a motor off a pump, and getting it wrong means the whole thing has to come apart again. Hollow shaft motors slide straight onto the pump shaft. B3/B14 flange motors bolt to a face and drive through a coupling. Elastic joint motors use a flexible drive that tolerates a little misalignment and takes the shock out of an unloader dumping. Sizes from 1.5 kW single phase to 11 kW three phase, all current stock.

Technicians Advice

The failure people do not see coming with electric drive is not the motor, it is the starting current and the duty cycle. A pressure cleaner in a wash bay can start and stop dozens of times an hour if the operator uses the trigger as an on/off switch, and every start draws several times full load current.

Direct online starting on a 7.5 or 11 kW motor doing that will trip breakers, cook contactors and eventually cook the windings, and the motor gets blamed. Two fixes: fit a proper unloader so the machine idles in bypass instead of stopping, or fit a star delta or soft starter above about 5.5 kW.

Thing: hollow shaft motors need the pump shaft clean and lightly greased on assembly, and they need the retaining screw done up properly - a hollow shaft motor that works loose will chew both shafts in minutes and you will be buying a motor and a pump.

Electric motors do not like being hosed. It sounds obvious in a wash bay, but the number of motors that come back full of water because someone rinsed the machine down is remarkable.
