Comet FWD25040G Direct Drive Triplex Pump - 19.2 L/min, 4,000 psi

The direct drive FW2. Good flow and 4,000 psi from a hollow shaft pump, which makes it a strong fit for petrol driven trailer units where you want the output of a belt drive machine without the belt drive frame.

The Comet FWD25040G delivers 19.2 L/min at 4,000 psi running at 3,400 rpm, with a 1" hollow shaft.

Technicians Advice

  • Direct drive runs at motor speed, and that is the trade you are making. Three times the shaft speed of a belt drive pump means three times the wear rate on plungers and seals for the same flow. They are cheaper to buy and quicker to fit, but plan on a seal kit at a shorter interval and do not spec one for continuous eight hour duty.
  • The suction side is unforgiving on these. At 3,400 rpm the pump has far less time to fill each chamber, so a restricted inlet cavitates almost immediately. Keep the suction hose short, at least as big as the inlet port, and gravity fed if you possibly can.
  • Check the hollow shaft and key before you fit it. A worn motor shaft or a tired key lets the pump move on the shaft, and once it starts fretting it will chew both. A smear of anti seize on assembly saves you cutting it off later.
  • Bypass heat builds much faster at motor speed. If the gun is shut for more than a minute or two, the water in the loop gets hot enough to damage seals. Fit a thermal relief valve if the machine is likely to idle in bypass.
  • Oil change intervals are shorter than you think. First at 50 hours, then every 300 rather than 500. Milky oil means the seals are passing water and the kit is due.
  • Never dry run it. Water is the only lubricant the plunger seals get, and at these speeds a dry pump destroys itself in seconds rather than minutes.
