What a cavity plug is for

A blanking plug that screws into an unused cartridge cavity. You need one whenever a manifold is machined with more cavities than the circuit currently uses – either because the block is a standard part with spare positions, or because you have designed in room to add a function later. Plug the hole and the block is pressure tight; leave it open and you have a very expensive colander.

Plugs are cavity specific. Match the code exactly – a 10-2 plug will not seal an 08-2 cavity.

What the cavity code means

Every screw-in cartridge has a cavity code – 08-2, 10-3, 12-2, 16-2 and so on. The first number is the frame size, the second is how many ports the cavity has. A 10-3 cartridge only fits a 10-3 body. Get the cavity right and everything else follows; get it wrong and nothing you buy will thread in.

Technicians Advice

Buy the plug at the same time as the block, not after you have already filled the machine with oil. Fit it with a new seal – the O-ring and backup washer are what seals a cartridge cavity, not the thread – and torque it to the same figure as a cartridge in that cavity, because it is sealing against the same lands. If you are plugging a cavity to disable a function temporarily, write it on a label and stick it on the block: a plugged cavity looks identical to an empty one from the outside, and the next person will spend an hour working out why the circuit does nothing. Keep a couple of spares of whatever cavities your fleet uses – they cost less than twenty dollars and a missing one stops a machine.
