BSP Tapered Male x NPT Tapered Male Straight Adaptor

Tapered thread on both ends, BSPT one side and NPT the other. This is the joiner you reach for when American-built gear lands on an Australian machine and neither port will take the other thread.

Thread Standards

• BSP Tapered Male – BSPT to ISO 7 / BS 21. It seals on the tapered thread itself, so it needs PTFE tape or a liquid thread sealant.
• NPT Tapered Male – ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 tapered pipe thread. It seals on thread interference, so tape or sealant is a must.

How to Choose

• BSPT is a 55° Whitworth form, NPT is 60°. They will start together and feel right for a turn or two, then tear the thread and weep.
• Both ends seal on the thread, so both need sealant. Anaerobic thread sealant or PTFE tape, kept back off the first two threads so nothing shears into the system.
• Do not go by the number on the port. 1/2" BSPT and 1/2" NPT are different pitches, so check each end against the part it screws into.

Technicians Advice

Most NPT weeps come from over-tightening, not under. A tapered thread wedges as it winds, so take it hand tight then two or three turns on the spanner and stop. Chasing a weep with more torque splits the female port and turns a fitting job into a housing job.

• BSP Tapered Male – Older Australian and British pipework, gauge ports, tank and return lines, and cast pump and gearbox housings.
• NPT Tapered Male – American-built gearboxes, pumps, compressors and older industrial pipework.

• BSP Tapered Male – BSPT to ISO 7 / BS 21, written R for male. Sometimes labelled PT or BSP taper.
• NPT Tapered Male – ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 tapered pipe thread. The dryseal variant is written NPTF.

Parker, Gates, Aeroquip and Ryco all manufacture to these same standards under their own part numbering, so a fitting built to the standard above will mate with theirs.
