Thread Standards

• BSP Tapered Male – BSPT to ISO 7 / BS 21. It seals on the tapered thread itself, so it needs PTFE tape or a liquid thread sealant.
• Chinese Flat Face Male – metric flat-face pattern used on Chinese-built equipment. It seals on a flat face with an O-ring rather than a cone.

How to Choose

• The flat face is not ORFS. It looks similar and will not seal against it, so check the face diameter and thread against the port.
• Tape or sealant on the BSPT end only. The flat face seals on its O-ring.
• Confirm the O-ring is present in the face before assembly.

Technicians Advice

The trap here is assuming Chinese flat face and ORFS are the same because both seal on a flat face with an O-ring. Thread and face sizes differ. If a joint pulls up but weeps straight away, measure the face rather than reaching for a bigger spanner.

• BSP Tapered Male – Older Australian and British pipework, gauge ports, tank and return lines, and cast pump and gearbox housings.
• Chinese Flat Face Male – Chinese-built excavators, loaders and attachments – SANY, XCMG, LiuGong, Lovol and similar.

Cross-Reference

• BSP Tapered Male – BSPT to ISO 7 / BS 21, written R for male. Sometimes labelled PT or BSP taper.
• Chinese Flat Face Male – Metric flat-face pattern. Not an ORFS substitute despite the similar look – confirm the face and thread against the port.

Parker, Gates, Aeroquip and Ryco all manufacture to these same standards under their own part numbering, so a fitting built to the standard above will mate with theirs.
