Thread Standards

• BSP Tapered Female – BSPT to ISO 7 / BS 21. It seals on the thread interference and must be taped or sealed.
• JIC 37° Male – SAE J514 37° flare. It seals metal-to-metal on the 37° cone, so it takes no tape at all.

How to Choose

• The tapered female seals on the thread and needs sealant. The JIC male seals dry on its 37° cone.
• BSPT is 55° and NPT is 60°. They start together and tear, so confirm what the mating male actually is.
• Keep sealant well clear of the JIC cone.

Technicians Advice

Hand tight plus two or three turns on the tapered end and stop. A tapered thread wedges as it goes, and the extra torque people put in chasing a weep is what cracks a cast housing.

• JIC 37° Male – SAE J514 / ISO 8434-2 37° flare. Parker call this series Triple-Lok. The industrial cousin of the AN 37° flare used in aviation and motorsport.
