BOSS Porta Power Kit – 4, 10 or 20 Tonne, Hand Pump, Ram, Extensions and Attachments in a Case

One case, one pump, one ram and everything you bolt on the end of it. A porta power kit is the tool that pushes a chassis rail back, spreads a jammed door, straightens a bucket ear or lifts a load in a place a bottle jack will never fit. Three sizes – 4, 10 and 20 tonne – each with the hand pump, hose, cylinder, extension tubes and the full set of heads, bases and toes, packed in a blow moulded case so nothing walks off the bench. Ways to buy

• PPK4 – 4 tonne, 16 pieces – 4" stroke cylinder, four extension tubes, spreader and the full head set. The panel shop kit.
• PPK10 – 10 tonne, 16 pieces – 6" stroke cylinder and longer tubes. The general workshop kit and the one most people should buy.
• PPK20 – 20 tonne, 15 pieces – two speed hand pump, 5" stroke cylinder, tubes out to 27.5" and a threaded coupling system. Truck, plant and heavy fabrication.
• Need more stroke or more tonnes? – a separate 700 bar hand pump, cylinder and hose will do anything a kit will and go further. See the links at the bottom of this page.

How to choose

• Panel and light vehicle work? PPK4. It is the lightest to carry and 4 tonne moves more sheet metal than people expect.
• One kit for the whole workshop? PPK10. Ten tonne and a 6 inch stroke covers vehicle, trailer and general fabrication work.
• Trucks, plant, heavy fab? PPK20. The two speed pump takes up the slack fast and then changes over under load, which saves a lot of handle strokes.
• Pushing, not lifting? Remember a porta power ram is single acting – it pushes out under pressure and returns on its spring. Set the job up so gravity is not fighting the return.
• Need more than 20 tonne, or a longer stroke? Buy a separate pump, hose and cylinder. Links at the bottom of this page.

Technicians Advice

The kit lives or dies on the extension tubes. Every join is a hinge, and the more tubes you screw together the more the whole assembly wants to fold in the middle under load – so build the shortest column that will do the job, put the fattest tube nearest the ram, and never leave a partly engaged thread. Get the tubes square to the work before you pump, not after: a column that is out of line will spit a head across the workshop the moment it takes real pressure, and at four tonne that is a serious injury.

Two habits worth building.

Always fit the base that suits the surface – a flat base on flat steel, the 90 degree V base in a corner or on a rail, the serrated saddle where you need bite. Half the porta power accidents in a workshop are a ram slipping off a smooth surface because someone could not be bothered swapping the head.

Crack the release valve slowly. A single acting ram under a spread load comes back fast if you dump it, and whatever you have wedged apart will move.

And the same rule as everywhere else: this is a pushing and spreading tool, not a support. If something has to stay where you pushed it, put steel or cribbing in behind it before you let the pressure off.
